I am here today, as I have been asked to speak to you about the poetry of Eavan Boland. She found herself occupying two very different roles, the role of a mother and wife, and the role as a poet. The business of poetry, however, is to capture a moment and the freeze-frame of a child’s smile, the private conspiracy of a night feed or the memory of an abandoned bike are a s real as battles or love affairs. In her 1995 work Object Lessons: The Life of the Woman and the Poet in Our Time (Carcanet), Eavan Boland described a powerful dilemma at the heart of women’s writing about motherhood. The poem embraces the institutions: the ‘parks of Motherhood’, ‘Motherhood’s cemeteries’, the ‘chapel of Motherhood’, the ‘whole wild fucking queendom’ and ‘all the souls that were in it’. Besides, I have lived in the ambiguity as a woman poet of deeply honouring the work of male poets while at the same time wishing to contest ‘some of the assumptions around that work”. On the other hand, she feels the pressure of a ‘feminist’ force which suggests that such experiences are the fit subject for anger, and that the anger itself the proper subject for poetry. Death is final and the child cannot ‘listen’ anymore to our feeble justifications for political violence. Her eight volume of poetry, The Lost Land, was published in 1998, while there have also been two volumes of selected work including Outside History (1990), An Origin Like Water – Collected Poems 1967 – 1987 and an outstanding memoir Object Lessons (1995) which is as much a powerfully argued evocatively-written poetic manifesto as autobiography. Sullivan’s long poem opens with the line: ‘Things happened in the wrong order, out of nature’. Studying this arbitrary selection of her poems here should impress on us her vast and vital legacy. Much of her imagery is of a visual kind, in itself emphasising the importance of ‘seeing’ and ‘reflecting’ in her work. Nature has colonised the suburbs (‘Stars rise / Moths flutter’, ‘one window is yellow as butter’). Questions of identity— as an Irish woman, mother, poet, and exile— give rise to much of Eavan Boland’s poetry. There was nothing clear-cut about my feelings. The subject of her undergraduate thesis in Smith College was: ‘The Magic Mirror: A Study of the Double in Dostoevsky Novels’. How much has Poem … The poet manages this by creating opposing tensions within the poem: waking/sleeping, adults/child, the ‘living’/’dead’, ‘song’/‘cry’, ‘tune’/’discord’. Another poem in which history and violence is a big theme is ‘The War Horse’. The infant victims of the bombings include Anne Marie O’Brien (5 months) and her sister Jacqueline (17 months) along with their parents John (24) and Anna (22) – the entire family killed in the Parnell Street explosion. They ‘stitched blooms for the ivory tulle to hem the oyster gleam of the veil’ and they ‘made hoops for the crinoline. / She was gone. In ‘the war horse’ Boland is inspired by the suburbs in a different way. Historically the woman is the passive object of poetry. We hear each other clearly’. Even though this poem strains so hard against the language that it must be contained by, the specific, individual experience remains social, precisely because it must contained, at the last, in language. Overall, I think that the poetry of Eavan Boland is wonderfully unique and enjoyable to read. The sense of national identity that comes across from ‘The Famine Road’ speaks of victimisation, being downtrodden and living out pointless lives; see also the suffering in ‘Outside History’.
