St Mawes and Tresanton have been a preserve of the sailing set for years, but it is only since the 1999 reopening, after an extensive refurbishment to bring it up to the standard expected by owner Olga Polizzi and her chi-chi A-list clientele that it has achieved its Halkin-on-sea tag. So for my first holiday of 2020 I decided to visit Cornwall, somewhere I use to visit on a regular basis but have not visited for around 10 years. The beach club looked great and we had a peak but the weather wasn’t good enough to sit out. There are two hotels in the world that we call our favourite and this remains one of them. Conveniently located restaurants include St Mawes Bakery, Hotel Tresanton Restaurant, and The Watch House. (We started to wonder whether there are underground tunnels from Olga Polizzi’s kitchen.). Extra beds for 4–12 year olds can be added to some Spacious Double or Twin rooms (£40 a night). The bar, situated on the lower floor, is Tresanton’s greatest asset (in no small part because I am an aspiring alcoholic): cute mini armchairs, chocolate and tan pepper Amtico flooring, clotted-cream walls and clever lighting that could make even Dot Cotton look unravaged, nay, sexy. The staff speaks multiple languages, including English, German, and Italian. My wife and I stayed for 3 nights soon after lockdown. The staff could not do any more to make our stay so memorable, morning tea and coffee was sent up when we requested it in the morning at no extra cost. I would recommend this hotel, it's not cheap, but given this is my first break, who cares, having a wondertime was the aim.
