The Englishman's Boy is a novel by Guy Vanderhaeghe, published in 1996 by McClelland and Stewart, which won the Governor General's Award for English-language fiction in 1996 and was nominated for the Giller Prize.It deals with the events of the Cypress Hills Massacre (1873) as told 50 years later to a young screenwriter in Hollywood by the last living survivor. A movie producer in 1920s Hollywood tries to track down an elusive Western star for his next picture. The second story takes place in Hollywood during the 1920s and is a first-person account of a hack title writer, Harry Vincent, who is plucked out of obscurity by the studio’s enigmatic head, Damon Ira Chance, and given the task of finding a cowboy named Shorty McAdoo. Though never didactic, The Englishman’s Boy delivers an excellent history lesson. With Alden Adair, Ryland Alexander, Kent Allen, Tim Allen. the englishman's boy is part western, and part early hollywood tale, exploring how we interpret civilization and savagery in our personal thoughts and action, and how that is reflected in the rest of society.
