Orlando Figes is Professor of History at Birkbeck College, University of London. He attended William Ellis School in north London and studied History at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, graduating with a double-starred first in 1982. Born in Islington, north London, Figes is the son of John George Figes and the feminist writer Eva Figes whose Jewish family fled Nazi Germany in 1939. Orlando Figes teaches history at Birkbeck, University of London and is the author of many acclaimed books on Russian history, including A People's Tragedy, which The Times Literary Supplement named as one of the '100 most influential books since the war', Natasha's Dance, The Whisperers, Crimea and Just Send Me Word. He completed his PhD at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a fellow and lecturer in history from 1984 to 1999 before he succeeded Richard J. Evans as professor of history at Birkbeck His latest book is Revolutionary Russia, 1891–1991: A History.
